Remarks

ANSP 115226

remarks Specimen missing 1: 'Type and paratypes' figured by Pilsbry, 1948, ANSP Mon. 3, vol. 2, pt. 2. 'type', alc specimen, shown in figs. 299b, 300a,c,d; 'paratypes' shown in figs. 299b,d, 300b (alc) and 292h (dry); type lot given as ANSP 115226 by Pilsbry (1944, 1948). ANSP catalogue lists 115226 as Agriolimax campestris from Sawyer Peak, 1 dry specimen and 4+/- alc specimens. Lot found in alc collection 28 Jun 1988 marked in Pilsbry's hand, 'Deroceras heterura Pils type', with original label A. campestris, with catalogue no. 180666. Catalogue lists 180666 as type of D. heterura from Sawyer Peak, 1 dry specimen. In dry collection, one specimen was found, no. 115226, from Sawyer Peak, identified as D. heterura (previously A. campestris), marked only as a figured specimen; it is verified as the specimen figured by Pilsbry (1948, fig. 292h) as a 'paratype' (A. E. bogan & E. E. Spamer, 28 Jun 1988). The alc specimen '180666' is determined to be too small to be Pilsbry's 'type' so is considered to be a paralectotype. The lectotype is an alc specimen which has not been located (as of 28 Jun 1988). Because a lectotype has been selected, it retains the original lot number ANSP 115226, and the paralectotypes are split out from the lectotype lot. Since there is confusion surrounding the specimen catalogued as 180666, the entire paralectotype suite is recatalogued as dry + alc, ANSP 371416, A12333; however, Pilsbry (1948) figures at least two alc 'paratypes' so the entire lot has not been located as of Jun 1988. The lectotype, an alc specimen, is not to be assigned a new alc catalogue number until it is recovered. Specimens first noted by Pilsbry & Ferriss (1917, Proc. ANSP 69:103) as A. campestris, only as 'taken at 6 stations in the wooded zone of the black range' {entire note}.) 2: As noted above this is a missing type. Lot originally entered here was recatalogued at an unknown date as paralectotypes under serial 49186. Annotation 2 added 1999-Jan-15, Paul J. Morris.
